This 1959 Porsche 356A Convertible D is one of approximately 1,331 examples manufactured during a single year of production and was acquired by the current owner’s family in 1971. A multi-year refurbishment was carried out throughout the 2000s and was later brought to completion in 2020. The car has reportedly been stored since, and in preparation for the sale it was recommissioned with carburetor and brake services, a tune-up, a replacement battery, and a set of Michelin tires. It is powered by a replacement 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle and is finished in Ruby Red over tan leather. Features include a beige soft top, 15″ ventilated steel wheels, a driver-side mirror, body-color bumpers, and bucket seats. This 356A Convertible D is now offered on dealer consignment with a copy of the Kardex, service records, and a clean Washington title.
Convertible D models were produced between 1958 and 1959 with coachwork contracted to Karosseriewerke Drauz in Heilbronn, Germany, hence the “D” model designation. All 1,331 were sold as 1959 models, and notable differentiations included roll-up side windows and a windshield that was 3″ taller than the Speedster’s. This example came finished in Ruby Red (5702) and was repainted in the 2000s. A replacement beige soft top was installed at that time, and the car is equipped with a chrome driver-side mirror, Speedster-style side trim, and body-color bumpers. The floor pans were replaced and rust repair was previously performed on the body and battery box in 1990.
The 15″ ventilated steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and were mounted with Michelin XAS tires in preparation for the sale. The drum brakes were also serviced, and Koni shocks are fitted at each corner.
The fixed-back bucket seats and door panels were reupholstered in tan leather in 2009, and replacement beige squareweave carpets were installed.
The two-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation consisting of a central 6k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge monitoring oil temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 68k miles.
The replacement 1.6-liter flat-four was rebuilt by Vic Skirmants’ 356 Enterprises of Michigan in 2009. The dual carburetors were rebuilt in preparation for the sale, and additional work involved a tune-up and a replacement battery.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle.
A copy of the Kardex lists the factory colors along with a build date of November 10, 1958 and initial delivery through Hulpert & Co. in Dortmund, Germany.
